Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, near the bank of the Killi river in the south of Thiruvananthapuram, is the home of the Devi whom the city lovingly calls Attukal Amma. She is worshipped as Bhadrakali and is widely identified with Kannaki, the heroine of the Tamil epic Chilappathikaram – a mother who protects her children and stands up against injustice.
The temple is known around the world for Attukal Pongala, when lakhs of women cook a sweet offering for the goddess in clay pots along the streets, yards and open grounds for kilometres around. Because of this it is often described as a women's Sabarimala. Outside the festival it is a busy yet homely shrine where people come to pray for their families' health and happiness.
The story goes that an elder of the Mullaveettil family was bathing in the Killi river when a young girl asked him to help her across. He carried her over and brought her home, but she vanished before the family could look after her. That night the goddess appeared to him in a dream and asked to be installed in the sacred grove nearby, at a spot she would mark. In the morning he found three lines drawn on the ground there, and a small shrine was raised – the beginning of the temple.
Devotees also link Attukal with Kannaki. After burning Madurai in grief and anger over the unjust execution of her husband Kovalan, she is said to have rested at Attukal on her way to Kodungallur. Every year the Thottampattu songs, begun when the goddess is ritually ‘bound’ in the Kappukettu ceremony at the start of the festival, retell her story, and the Pongala on the ninth day is said to celebrate her victory over the Pandya king.
The grove shrine has grown into a large temple complex whose carvings – of Kali, Parvathi, Shiva and the ten avatars of Vishnu – mix Kerala and Tamil styles. It is managed by the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple Trust, which also runs educational and charitable work. Attukal Pongala has been entered in the Guinness World Records as the largest gathering of women for a religious activity.

Modest traditional clothes are best: a saree, set-mundu or churidar for women, and a mundu or trousers for men. Men may be expected to remove their shirt before approaching the sreekovil. Customs can change – follow the temple's current notices.
Footwear is left outside. During the Pongala festival the roads around the temple are closed or diverted and the police manage the crowds; plan to arrive on foot. Pongala itself is offered only by women, and many choose and mark their spot along the streets well before the day.
The ten days of the Pongala festival in Kumbham (February–March) – above all Pongala day – bring huge crowds to the whole city. Full-moon days, when the Aiswarya Pooja is held, Navaratri and the Mandala season are also busy. On ordinary weekday mornings darshan is usually quick.
Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple – about 2 km north at East Fort.
Manacaud Dharma Sastha Temple – where the Devi's procession goes after Pongala, a short distance away.
Kuthiramalika Palace Museum – beside the Padmanabhaswamy Temple.
Kovalam beach – about 15 km south.
